Satellite connectivity provider Marlink has won a contract to upgrade and renew data transmission infrastructure for the Swiss Federal Office for IT, Systems & Telecommunication (FOITT).

The contract covers Marlink satellite services and technology provisioning: Swiss embassy sites around the world will be connected by a secure, multi-band network, using satellite-based solutions to improve the infrastructure of embassies’ data communication.

The upgrade will begin with the migration of existing Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite communications installations at embassy sites. From this starting point, Marlink will implement secure, resilient technical upgrades with minimal disruption at point of use.

Using Marlink’s VSAT service as the foundation of its data communications protocols, the programme will provide Carrier Class Global Layer IP VPN services to embassies, keeping vital diplomatic and corporate data secure by establishing private internet connections between sites. The flexibility provided by Marlink will ensure each Swiss embassy site has sufficient bandwidth to accomplish its online aims and optimise availability of data communications.

As part of the revitalised infrastructure, Marlink will deploy NewTec Dialog technology, which enables users to build and adapt satellite networking infrastructure systems according to business needs. This will contribute to a connectivity platform described by Marlink as “scalable and future-proof”; the ongoing evolution of FOITT’s operations will be optimally supported by the infrastructure’s capacity to adapt to and meet new technological and functional needs where necessary.

Olivier Gommes, Director of Technology & Innovation – Enterprise at Marlink, said: “The Swiss federal administration’s confidence in our technology, satellite services and operational support confirms Marlink’s ability to provide reliable and secure solutions that meet governmental business and critical communications needs today and for the future, on a global basis.”

The Marlink group, a pioneer in business-critical IT and communications solutions, has been in existence for over 70 years, beginning as a maritime radio communications network in Europe in the 1940s. The group now operates worldwide with over 1,000 employees, serving connectivity and digital needs of customers in maritime and enterprise fields across five continents.
