Jens Stoltenberg will renew his role as NATO Secretary General for another two-years.
The announcement made by NATO means the former Prime Minister of Norway will remain in his current role until the end of September 2020.
Stoltenberg has served as secretary general since 2014, during which time Europe has witnessed a resurgent Russia, the UK vote to leave the EU, the addition of Montenegro to the alliance, and criticisms from US President Donald Trump.
Stoltenberg has previously noted that boosting defence spending was a priority of his when he came into the job in 2014, and added that “in 2017, we estimate a real defence spending increase of 4.3% in Europe and Canada – a third straight year of accelerating increases.”
The secretary general has also laid out his primary goals for the alliance in 2018, which include laying out clear pathways for countries to reach 2% spending of gross domestic product on defence and a reorganisation of the military command structure.
