Varberg: a vision of the future

With its coastal location, natural attractions and a broad range of exciting urban developments, the western Swedish municipality of Varberg offers a multitude of  opportunities in the future to work, live and visit.

Varberg, which has won Fokus magazine’s Best Place to Stay in Sweden five years running, aims to become the creative centre of Sweden’s west coast by implementing an array of social developments; including housing, infrastructure, rail and port operations. The city has won several prizes in the last few years for its creative expansions and quality of living.

All the projects in development across Varberg are focused in sustainability, environmental concerns and how best to implement new and disruptive technologies to maximise residents’ convenience. Electric vehicle charging points are to be installed; while Varberg’s rapidly expanding suburbs are filled with energy saving housing developments.

Varberg’s commitment to education

As Varberg continues to develop, with an increasing number of residential facilities, creative clusters and ample facilities for cycling, skiing and surfing, the next project its policymakers plan to work towards is a boost in the city’s university research provision. Officials intend to boost the range of education facilities available at Varberg’s university campus in order to expand the variety of skills available in the region.

This eBook also includes:

Carl Bartler, Municipal Director of Varberg, on how the city has grown and evolved since the 1970s and how it will continue to develop in the future;

Dzejna Seta, Marketing Manager at council-owned housing company Varbergs Bostad, on the council’s most ambitious building project to date;

An overview of the city’s ongoing coastal development, Västerport, which will include a new ferry port and industrial port as well as a new urban district with shops, public services and a wide residential area;

Project manager Anders Wilberg on the future of Västerport and its attached port, Farehamnen.
